    Symbiont provided support for a 3D Environmental Site Analysis, with complex site conditions, by creating a 3D map illustrating soil PCB concentrations over regulatory levels. The 3D mapping was instrumental in planning additional sampling requirements by showing where data gaps existed both horizontally and vertically.

    Symbiont assisted the City of Watertown's Engineering Department in transitioning from a paper-based (Right-of-Way) permit application process to an electronic submittal work flow. Symbiont provided city staff with tools to allow them to import documents into the City’s Enterprise GIS database while enabling them to have real-time access to permits in the City GIS Viewer.

    Symbiont assisted the City of Beaver Dam prepare an eight year CCTV Sewer Inspection Program & BID Documents. Utilizing GIS mapping and analysis, Symbiont enabled the City to quickly quantify pipe lengths, by size, for each year and communicate and track pipe cleaning requirements on an annual basis.

    Symbiont assisted a local government in better understanding, visualizing, and communicating value density as it relates to non-residential properties in the community. The web application tool is currently being used to identify those areas which are underperforming as well as those areas meeting the City’s value density expectations.

    To assist the City of Watertown's Engineering Department with a sidewalk capital improvement project, Symbiont performed a Geographic Analysis Study using distributed and weighted variables to prioritize areas for potential sidewalk construction. Outcomes from Symbiont's analysis were used to quantitatively rank which future sidewalks would have the highest impact on the community as well as visually communicate proposed sidewalk locations to the City's decision makers.

    Symbiont worked with the City of Watertown Water Department to implement a Hydrant Flushing Mobile GIS Application that would allow field staff the ability to document hydrant flushing activities using Collector for ArcGIS. With the introduction of this app, supervisors now have the ability to view updates in real-time and can easily export results for reporting purposes.

    Results: 

    Symbiont is participating in a 5 year $1M USEPA grant being led by the University of Louisville. Collaborating with team members on gathering and integrating Brownfields data, Symbiont is measuring Brownfields redevelopment impact on social, economic, and environmental benefits. Symbiont is also working to ensure that the GIS database Community Benefits Tool serves the needs of area wide grantees.

    The City of Racine's previous GIS viewer was difficult to maintain and update. The system lacked intuitiveness and cross-platform compatibility. Using ESRI’s WebApp Builder for ArcGIS (Developer Edition), Symbiont developed a new GIS application designed to meet the needs of all City departments. Symbiont refined the overall presentation of asset mapping with improved cartography and custom basemap features.

    Results: 

    Symbiont supported the City of Wauwatosa Public Works department by creating an Interactive Leaf Collection Map to provide citizens with the ability to view real-time updates for when leaf collection will occur in their neighborhood. Public works staff are able to edit the interactive map allowing them to communicate any changes to the public immediately.

    Symbiont simplified forestry operations for the City of Watertown by implementing a Tree Inventory Data Collection Application for the City's forestry staff using Collector for ArcGIS. In 2016, the City collected information about more than 4500 trees throughout the city using the Collector application. Currently, forestry staff are using the tree inventory application for documenting all forestry maintenance operations, resulting in improved record keeping and reporting.

    South Bend Brownfields Coalition Data Portal Symbiont worked in collaboration with the City of South Bend, St. Joseph County, City of Mishawaka, and the USEPA to mine and map existing and historic datasets. This project was undertaken as part of providing the Coalition with an interactive and dynamic mapping tool which is currently being used to spur redevelopment using data driven strategies.

    Symbiont worked collaboratively with engineering staff from the City of Wauwatosa to implement a map-based manhole inspection app. This interactive mobile app simplified data collection while streamlining communication and reporting requirements.

    Symbiont provided city-wide utility GPS mapping services for the City of Fort Atkinson using RTK Sub-Centimeter GPS units and ArcGIS Collector apps. In a time-frame of less than three weeks, Symbiont surveyed over 6,500 sanitary, storm, and water assets owned by the City. This utility GPS mapping provided the City with high-accuracy horizontal coordinate and vertical elevation information thus improving mapping and geometric connectivity.

These services included data development, application implementation, system integration, and training to improve communication, provide better asset management and enhanced planning and reporting abilities for the City's water, wastewater, stormwater, engineering, planning, parks, and administrative purposes.

    Results: 

    Symbiont worked with the City of Racine to implement their USEPA Community-Wide Brownfield Assessment Grant. Target brownfield sites were identified and assessed to facilitate cleanup, closure, and redevelopment of properties.

    Results: 

    Symbiont led evaluation and design of improvements to several water reclamation facility systems. Upgrades addressed the effluent pumping network to avoid pressure drops. Existing tunnel lighting was updated and chlorine contact basin sluice gates were replaced. Modifications were made to the boiler system to reduce the potential for low CO levels.

    Results: 

    Symbiont led a multi-firm team to design pump station and conveyance system improvements to address flow increases and aging infrastructure. This included expansion of a wet well, an increase in existing influent sewer storage, evaluation of alternative pump combinations, backup emergency power generators, and ventilation improvements.

    Symbiont provided services for a new wet weather treatment facility; a key asset in the City’s LTCP for control of CSO’s. This facility includes 265 MGD of screening and pumping, 90 MGD of clarification, chlorine disinfection, and solids handling.

    Results: 

    New facility began operation in June, 2014, ahead of the negotiated schedule with USEPA.

    Symbiont provided services to replace 24 belt filter presses. Symbiont evaluated the existing infrastructure to determine if client should rehabilitate or replace considering capital, O&M, schedule, construction constraints and process performance.

    Results: 

    Client selected new presses. Symbiont completed bid documents within the project schedule and budget. Equipment is exceeding client expectations.

    • Evaluated pumping station improvement alternatives to increase reliable tunnel pumping
    • Screened alternatives for the upgrade and expansion of the Inline Storage System pumping station

    Results: 

    Symbiont evaluated long-term facility improvements that included deep construction of new facilities versus expansion of the existing pump station. Symbiont also designed HVAC systems that addressed moisture and air quality issues.

    Results: 

    Symbiont created bidding documents for disposal of dredged sediment, developed stage/discharge capability of the existing outlet structures, and evaluated modifications that increased discharge ability. We performed all hydraulic modeling for the existing pond and discharge structures, and added modifications to match the increase inflow-pumping rate.

    Results: 

    Symbiont designed a facility to treat combined sewer overflow. Following completion of the preliminary design, the City retained Symbiont to complete a detailed design of the wet weather treatment system, which included screening, pumping, wet weather clarification, solids handling, and digester heating.

    2004 APWA National Technology Award Winning Project

    Results: 

    Symbiont identified and performed five projects. Two managed flow between plants, three focused on providing inline storage in combined sewers, and one involved storing water in an abandoned interceptor. For the inline storage projects, innovative pinch valve technology allowed the city to regulate the amount of flow diverted, utilizing the capacity of the diverted flow to an interceptor to use its full capacity.

    Symbiont performed pre- and final design services for the new biosolids dewatering and odor control systems that reduce the volume of land-applied solids. The combination of operational improvements with selected capital investments are saving the city nearly $1,000,000 in capital expenditures while achieving estimated similar odor control reduction as purely capital improvements.

    • Design of upgrades to wet weather pumping from 32 MGD to 45 MGD with added fine screening
    • Front clean/front return quarter-inch spaced screening system
    Results: 

    Symbiont completed a CSO LTCP to take advantage of new State of Indiana compliance options. The 20-year LTCP plan contains four phases, each separated by a one-year monitoring period to assess the effectiveness of the construction projects. The final design of the facilities includes a wet weather pump station and fine screening methods.
